Surface mountable radar modules for touch-free switches and motion detection

Infineon Technologies AG and InnoSenT GmbH released a surface mountable radar (SMR) motion detector operating within the 24 GHz ISM band. The SMR series from InnoSenT with the newest 24 GHz transceiver MMIC BGT24LTR11 from Infineon inside offer a singular combination of high functionality, low power consumption and easy-to-install solution.

Operating within the 24.0 GHz to 24.25 GHz ISM band, the Infineon transceiver features a totally integrated low phase noise voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) and built-in temperature compensation circuit for VCO stabilization. Additionally it's full ESD protection, 200 GHz bipolar SiGe: C technology B7HF200 and single supply voltage of three .3 V. These features make the Infineon MMIC the perfect part at the guts of the new InnoSenT series. The ultra-compact design of the SMR offering (20 mm x 15 mm x 3 mm) eases the mixing , allowing installation even within the smallest space available. It provides an ideal solution for Security Applications, Home-Automation,Lighting Control, Intelligent Machine Control, Touch-free Switches, and Movement Detection.

Radar utilized in motion detection applications increases accuracy in comparison to passive infrared (PIR) technology. It allows a more precise measurement of object detection and provides new capabilities like the detection of speed and direction of moving objects. Radar is additionally superior to camera based systems by allowing detection of the objects while keeping identities anonymous.

Available with different antenna patterns with an equivalent interface

The SMR series currently comprises three types with different antenna characteristics. additionally to the choice of straightforward motion detection with a corresponding evaluation, it's also possible to work out speed information and direction of movement to the detected object from the returned data. The Silicon Germanium radar MMIC from Infineon was designed with the Doppler-radar applications in mind, which enables additional functionalities. Beside 24 GHz fundamental voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) it also brings variants for FMCW (frequency modulated) or FSK (frequency shift keying) operation mode to the present series.
