Scientists have developed a replacement spray-on protective coating with an interesting ability to repel water which will be wont to waterproof smartphones, prevent ice from forming on aircraft or protect boat hulls from corroding.

The team created a way more robust coating than previous materials by combining two plastics, one tough and one flexible.
“It’s like two interwoven fishing nets, made from different materials,” Wong said.
The water-repellent or superhydrophobic coating is additionally transparent and very immune to ultraviolet .
Lead researcher and professor Antonio Tricoli said the new material could change how we interact with liquids.
“It will keep skyscraper windows clean and stop the mirror within the bathroom from fogging up,” Tricoli said.
“The key innovation is that this transparent coating is in a position to stabilise very fragile nanomaterials leading to ultra-durable nanotextures with numerous real-world applications,” said Tricoli.
The team developed two ways of making the fabric , both of which are cheaper and easier than current manufacturing processes.
One method uses a flame to get the nanoparticle constituents of the fabric . For lower temperature applications, the team dissolved the 2 components during a sprayable form.
In addition to waterproofing, the new ability to regulate the properties of materials might be applied to a good range of other coatings, said Wong.
“A lot of the functional coatings today are very weak, but we'll be ready to apply an equivalent principles to form robust coatings that are, for instance , anti-corrosive, self-cleaning or oil-repellent,” he said.
